Wanderer Leatherwork

My Methods

Everything I make follows a few core values:

  1. Handmade. I use no machines at any stage of the leatherworking process. I do use machines for other things like making coffee and this website.
  2. Durable. Wherever possible, I choose durability in my designs. You can learn more about this in the sections below.
  3. Accessible. At Witch and Wanderer, we want handmade goods to be available to anyone. Our affordable wares may be simpler than our fancy offerings, but they are made with the same care and attention to detail.

Cutting

Heavy shears do the grunt work and a set of good wood carving knives covers all my precision needs. All my items are cut using hand tools.

Preparing

Beveled edges and grooved stitch lines or aesthetic borders are small elements, but they contribute beauty and durability to the final product.

Carving

Carving and hammering are my preferred tooling methods. But stamping has its uses in my shop, as well!

Dyeing

All my leather starts as a blank, veg-tan side. I use Fiebings dye to turn out products in a wide variety of colors. But black is something special!

Tooling

A rubber hammer and few basic tools are responsible for 90% of my work.

Stitching

Not every project requires joining, but when it does, I choose hand-stitching for its strength and versatility.

Finishing

Most of my items are conditioned with neatsfoot oil and brushed with beeswax for protection and longevity. Burnishing on the edges and flesh side is also an important element for a quality finish.
